This trip has taken about 30 years, I have taken more than 80,000 pictures, and still I don’t pretend to know the full dimension of this country in order to state other than personal impressions along the way. Because of the very nature of this country, that of an ever changing reality, I find it almost impossible to describe it as an entity, it’s rather a collection of ideas in the process of becoming.

One can say almost anything about the USA, and it’s total opposite as well, and even have proof which could provide evidence of such opposite realities. They never cancel each other out, they just sit side by side, so one has to learn to understand such dichotomies in the process of making sense of what the USA is all about.

Photography is particularly well suited for such a task, because in and of itself, photography is never about any one single reality. It all depends on what the viewer intends to see within the image and that changes from viewer to viewer, let alone the intentions by the photographer. Therefore the impossible task of describing the USA within the scope of an exhibition which by it’s very nature must be limited, creates an additional layer of complexity, that I can only find as a welcoming challenge.

The challenge is not to arrive at a Cartesian logic which would only make the task impossible, but to understand the context of my personal discoveries in a Socratic manner, well in keeping with our Greek hosts.
