Bastia in the north-east of Corsica has become a point of arrival and departure for
my travelling on the island. Just underneath the mountaineous landscape of the
Cap Corse the city has extended far beyond its historic centre. Beyond its natural
frontiers the city meets a landscape, untouched by any development. Beyond the
signposted and the purposemade the mountains and the maquis remain places
of inaccessible wilderness and beauty.
The landscape refl ects and informs a strong sense of local particularity. In the mean
time it shows many signs of a subsequent process of disappearance and dissoval
of this particularity in favour of contemporary demands.
I was interested in the emerging tension and suspense, the frictions appearing
in an ongoing process of settling into a consistent, natural environment. Seen
from the distance the landscape becomes decipherable and distinguishable, as
somewhere between paradise and the periphery.
