Structural works, whether completed or not, arbitrary interventions, and makeshift constructions of undetermined use, constitute an environment with two main characteristics. The continuous alteration of the landscape, either due to human intervention or natural causes, and the reasons or randomness with which these changes occur. Abandoned restaurants, ruined nightclubs and small gas stations, bear witness to the changes that have occurred, and continue to occur, on a social and cultural level in the country.
The new form taken by the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway with the completion of infrastructure works did not restrict the route in terms of kilometers. It made it safer, more comfortable, and faster, but perhaps also more dull and tedious, as safety implies less life on the road. A standardized route gradually became less friendly to any attempt of a road trip, shifting focus solely on the destination rather than the journey itself.
