«Katerina Kaloudi’s images suggest inner realities. The photographer swaps the concept that has been following photography from the very beginning of the invention of the medium in the middle of nineteenth century – as strictly documentary, as a mirror or window – for that of photography as a «mirage», reflecting a mental landscape. In the context of that aesthetic discourse the camera is seen as a metamorphosing machine, through which paradoxically the photographer approaches the intangible instead of the tangible. Her inspiration resides in the pictorial works of Alfred Stieglitz and Minor White, where the photographed object becomes a metaphor, the photographic image extends beyond the subject, and the photograph is the subject itself, not just about it. The image is transformed into a new event, to be discovered by the viewer. Kaloudi seeks the spiritual or trancendental in her photographs, seeing the photographic process in almost mystical terms.
