Efstathia Flokatoula

This project was created after my first encounter with the work of the Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky and specifically with the film “The Mirror”. It is a visual study on the dual and contradictory sense of familiarity-uncanniness that arises when a person approaches aspects necessary for their personal realization, as is the also dual and contradictory relationship between security and freedom. The way this narrative is visualised in this photographic series is nature as a source of life, as a provider of the necessities of life, as a companion but also as a condition of danger, as light and as darkness. The images were created symbolically at the edge of these conditions, just as light is leaving and darkness has not yet taken over the scene.
