I only speak to birds when I’m mourning for this world
In Bordando el manto terrestre (Embroidering the Earth’s Mantle), a 1961 work by Remedios Varo, a tower is inhabited by female beings—the Creators of Life—who weave the fabric of the world and its mysteries into existence. Varo’s tower serves as the point of departure for a chaotic sequence of cosmic and esoteric events unfolding in the contemporary world.
Leaving the tower behind, abstract cosmic frequencies travel through the complexities of existence, transforming into birdsongs and laments that gently question the simplicity of genesis, death, and time. Since the very beginning of human history, the nature of presence has remained elusive. By digging back to the roots, a dimension between past and present gradually reveals itself: a place where absence becomes part of a harmonious balance, completing a full circle like the beginning and end of a day marked by a bird’s warble.
The work is part of an ongoing study of existentialism and mourning in folklore, through which the artist proposes an alternative perspective on the haunting presence of death within life. Using experimental techniques and archival materials, Danica seeks to capture the passage of time, the materiality of decay, and the glorious force of rebirth.
