Following the recent show of Nikos Markou, Gazi 1982–1984, CAN Christina Androulidaki Gallery presents Waiting in the Wings, Markou’s latest body of work, part of which was recently presented in the exhibition WHY LOOK AT ANIMALS? A Case for the Rights of Non-Human Lives at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST). The title draws from the theatrical expression describing the moment of anticipation in the “wings” — the spaces to the left and right of the stage — just before an actor enters the scene. In Markou’s series, the phrase takes on a dual meaning: it refers both to the wings of the birds he depicts and to a state of quiet presence suspended between appearance and concealment — the moment just before one steps forward, or before an imminent change becomes visible. Set within the fragile condition of coexistence between humans and animals, Markou’s works suspend time and invite viewers to observe closely that which may vanish the very next moment.
